Berhampur, Dec 25 (LocalWire) In a major breakthrough, police on Tuesday busted an inter-district highway dacoit gang and arrested its ten members, including two receivers of stolen items.
The gang was involved in looting a India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) loaded truck by assaulting its driver at Badaghati under Ganjam district’s Khallikote police station limits on December 4.
Police seized three vehicles, including the stolen truck, a mini-truck, a car, 450 cartoons of XXX Rum and ten mobile phone sets from the accused persons, said Superintendent of Police (Ganjam) Brijesh Kumar Rai.
Search is on to nab other members of the gang and recover remaining cartoons of the IMFL looted by the gang, he said.
Kingpin Ananta Kumar Machhua (23) of Ranapur in Nayagarh district was arrested after exchange of fire with the police at Gudi Dhepa village under Khallikote police station limits on early Tuesday.
One pistol, three live ammunition, a motorcycle and Rs 1500 were seized from him, said Rai.
An injured Machhua was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here for treatment.
“He is involved in at least ten criminal cases in Ganjam, Khurda and Nayagarh districts,” the police official said.
Other accused persons included Purushottam Baliarsingh of Gadabarapada, Pradip Pratap Singh of Dochhimana in Puri district, Abhijit Patalasingh of Nirakarapur, Nasir Saha of Khajuria, near Nirakarapur, Biranchikumar Behera of Jankia, Manoj Kumar Kandi of Jankia in Khurda district and Banamali Sahu of Kanapur in Cuttack district.
Besides, two other persons – Pramod Martha and Jogeswar Biswal of Khurda – were also arrested for receiving the stolen liquors, the police said.
Police said a truck-loaded with 950 cartoons of XXX Rum from a manufacturing unit at Gopalpur was going towards Nirgundi in Cuttack to deliver the liquor to the state-owned Odisha State Beverage Corporation (OSBC), when the gang looted the truck on December 4.
