Berhampur, Oct 9 (LocalWire): Berhampur Municipality Corporation today imposed Rs 55,000 fine on four medicine shops located inside the MKCG Medical College and Hospital and City Hospital here for stocking and using banned polythene bags.
‘The fine of Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 was collected from different medicine shops and huge quantities of polythene were seized from the shops,’ said BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore.
The fine was imposed on shop owners after district Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange, who is also the administrator of the civic body, found the banned polythene in the shops during his surprise visit to both the hospitals and ordered the civic body to impose heavy penalty on the offenders, Rathore said.
Despite several awareness programmes and crackdown by the BeMC, these medicine shops used polythene.
The BeMC commissioner said the crackdown on use of polythene would continue in the city in future.
Government has banned the stock, manufacture, transport of single use plastic items, including polythene bags from 2 October in five corporations including Berhampur and Puri municipality limits.
