Berhampur/Puri, Jan 5 (LocalWire) Picking up trash at least once a week and other measures by officials, volunteers, hoteliers and local people helped Gopalpur and Puri secure places in the list of top ten cleanest Indian beaches, officials said on Sunday.
As per the survey conducted by the National Center for Coastal Research (NCCR), the beach at Puri and Gopalpur stood second and fourth.
The Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district, 165 km from Odisha capital Bhubaneswar achieved the feat due to several measures taken by stakeholders to maintain cleanness, district collector Vijay Amrut Kulange told LocalWire.
Mo Gopalpur campaign is one of such measures, where different organizations were involved in the cleaning activities, he said.
Mo Gopalpur was launched last year.
The local civic body also launched an awareness drive called ‘Ebe Phool, Pare Fine’ to provide a clean and plastic-free environment.
The NCCR conducted the cleanness survey in the state in collaboration with Berhampur University on September 24 last year, on the occasion of International Coastal Clean-up day.
Pratap Mohanty, professor, marine science department, Berhampur University, a member of the team said the survey was carried out in Puri, Gopalpur, Rushikulya and Paradip.
“We had submitted the state survey report. Based on it, the NCCR has published the ranking report”, said Mohanty.
During the study, the team found 3.60-gram of solid waste materials per square meter beach area in Gopalpur followed by Puri (1.202 gram), he revealed.
In the temple town of Puri, the local administration has also been carrying out cleanness drive regularly with the help of volunteers and local residents.
The cleanest beach awaits you
“India’s cleanest beaches await you in Odisha. National Center for Coastal Research’s study backs our claims. So, this winter, escape the chill, enjoy the warmth of Odisha’s rich culture and inviting the clean white sandy beaches of Odisha” tweeted Odisha chief minister office.
“We hope more tourists will attract towards Gopalpur-on-Sea and Puri after a reputed organization like NCCR, declared these tourist destination towns in the state as the cleanest beaches in the country,” said joint secretary, Hotel and Restaurant Association of Odisha (HRAO).
The residents in Gopalpur also expressed their happiness over the development. “With the latest feat, our city will attract more tourists” Rajib Lochan Mishra, a resident of Gopalpur said.
Gopalpur-on Sea is already known as one of the tourist destination towns. Lakhs of people visit this place every year as they get a pleasant climate and sandy beach.
