Berhampur, July 16 (LocaWire): The Humanist and Rationalist Organisation, Berhampur, that fights against superstition, launched a campaign to counter the old-age beliefs of not eating during the lunar eclipse tonight.
The HRO has organised a community dinner for over 100 people and also planned to witness the partial lunar eclipse late tonight with naked eyes.
‘Since some years we are campaigning and trying to dispel the notion that eating during eclipses is harmful,’ said ET Rao, vice president of Federation of Indian Rationalist Association and president of HRO.
‘We are trying to educate the people that there is no science behind these beliefs,’ said HRO secretary Nandeshu Senapati.
With persistent campaigning, the people in the city have realized that eclipses are natural, he added.
‘In the past markets used to be closed during eclipses but today we have seen that the market is open.
Even the hoteliers are making good business.
The people have realized there was no base on the centuries-old beliefs,’ said J.Suresh, a member of HRO.
But in the rural areas, people still believe in superstitious practices and there is a need to change their mind set, he added.
They still stay indoors to avoid the ‘evil’ rays.
‘They need to be educated that there is no effect on us due to these phenomenons,’ stressed Suresh.
