Berhampur, March 17 (Localwire): An illegal firearms factory has been unearthed in Risiguda village of Kandhamal district, police said on Saturday.
Weapons and equipments used in making firearms have been seized by police in Friday’s raid, in which an alleged gunrunner, identified as Munibara Mallick, has also been arrested.
After a tip-off, police raided Mallick’s house from where he was making and supplying firearms to various clients, the inspector in-charge of Raikia police station Naresh Kumar Sahu said.
The accused has been involved in the illegal gun trade for past 5-6 years, and had been supplying firearms to clients in different districts, including Kandhamal and Nayagarh, Sahu said.
“We are currently investigating his supply chain,” he added.
This was the third case of firearms seizure in Kandhamal this week. Earlier, police had seized two country-made guns from Tikabali and Phiringia areas and two people were arrested.
Police had also seized five firearms from different places of neighbouring Gajapati district and arrested four people in connection with the cases.
Recently, police have launched a major search-and-seize drive against illegal weapons as part of security measures ahead of the assembly and parliamentary elections in the state.
