Berhampur, Sept 5 (LocalWire): Incessant rains lashed the city from today early morning and several low-lying areas have been inundated.
Water-logging was reported from Gajapati Nagara, Nilanchal Nagara, Niladri Bihar Gandhi Nagara, Braja Nagara, Tulasi Nagara, Bramhanagara and City High School areas with sewage water overflowing on the roads.
Berhampur registered over 94 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am, official sources said.
Pedestrians, wading through inundated streetwere disgusted with the pathetic state all over the city.
With several roads clogged, vehicular traffic came to a stand still for some hours in the morning in different areas.
Water entered houses in Laxmi Nursingh street causing anxiety and inconvenience to the residents.
Opposition parties blamed the district authorities for the situation.
‘As almost all the roads are damaged due to laying of pipes for the much-hyped Janibili project, the people are inconvenienced even when it is dry.
The situation has turned for the worst during rains,’ said BJP district president, Kanhu Charan Pati.
‘We have demanded for the repair of the roads before the monsoon but the authorities did not pay any heed,’ said Brundaban Khatei, a Congress Zilla Parishad member.
BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore visited some of the water-logged areas.
‘Water-logging was due to heavy rains and sanitary workers and machines have been pressed to clean the clogged drains,’ he said.
