Berhampur, November 18 (LocalWire): As part of the Navy Day Celebrations and to mark its 40th anniversary, INS Chilka in association with the fisheries department is conducting a three-day boat race for the fishing community here.
The event that commenced on Sunday includes boat races in two categories: Kata Mara boat race that involves standing and rowing by long bamboo poles, and Ahula boat race, where the participants are seated and use oars or flat planks to row the boat.
A total of 10 teams in each category, comprising of six pullers commanded by one Coxswain participated in both Races.
Over 200 fishermen from the Chilka Lake Fishermen Community are also competing in the event with much energy and gusto.
The maiden event was flagged off by Naval officer-in-charge (Odisha) Rituraj Sahu, and the inaugural race was witnessed by over 1,500 villagers at the Water Sports Complex.
The event has also brought solidarity amongst various local fishermen bodies like Eco-Tourism Development Society Balugaon, Maa Kalijai Motor Danga Malika Sangha, and Kalijai Boat Workers Union.
The new initiative taken by NOIC (Odisha) and INS Chilka has also been appreciated by the state administration and village heads alike.
