Bhubaneswar, Dec 2 (LocalWire): The Director General of Police today suspended the inspector in charge of Jharpokharia police station of Mayurbhanj district for gross negligence and dereliction of duty in monitoring of a rape case.
A 23-year-old lecturer had lodged an FIR at Jharpokharia police station on 30 October alleging that she had been raped by a distant relative during her visit to Keonjhar on 27 October.
However, local police handled the case ineptly despite it being sensitive in nature.
With no investigation of the complaint, the victim later hanged herself inside a college hostel at Rairangpur.
As the suicide of the rape victim had triggered state-wide furore, the district police chief suspended sub-Inspector Prashant Swain and transferred Inspector-in-Charge of Jharpokharia police station Sarat Kumar Mahalik for negligence of duty.
