Bhubaneswar, August 7 (LocalWire): Around 600 participants from across the country and also a few Asian countries are expected to attend the third edition of SOA International Model United Nations (SOAMUN) to be held at the SOA Deemed to be University from 9-11 August.
Model United Nations is a diplomatic debating competition where students are assigned countries and express the belief of their countries in committees to arrive at resolutions as per the given agenda.
Students who display prime skills in negotiating, public speaking, drafting of resolutions and diplomacy are awarded in the programme.
‘Basically, MUN is used to promote skills than to actually simulate the United Nations,’ Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Das, Dean (Students’ Welfare) of SOA, said.
Participants from Indonesia and Bangladesh are expected to attend the event, he said.
SOA had organised two editions of Model United Nations in the past and this time there would be six committees with distinctive agenda on which the deliberations would take place, Sriswarupa Padhi, a SOA student and secretary general of SOA International MUN, said.
The committees would include United Nations economic and social council (ECOSOC), United Nations commission on the status of women (UNCSW), International organisation for migration (IOM), United Nations general assembly -special political and de-colonisation committee (UNGA-SPECPOL), World Health Assembly (WHA) and International Press.
ECOSOC’s agenda would be to assess the role of sustainable development goals in tackling violence and socio-economic instability with special emphasis on areas of political vulnerability and conflict while UNCWS would deliberate on social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
The agenda for IOM would be facilitation and regulation of migration with special emphasis on forced migration in South and South-East Asia.
‘Discussing the growth of private military and security’ would be the theme for UNGA-SPECPOL while WHA would deliberate on global strategy on health, environment and climate change while International Press would report the entire event and produce a film on the same.
Students studying in Class IX to those in under graduate classes can take part in the three-day event, Padhi said.
