Berhampur, March 24 (LocalWire): Resentment brewed in the BJP over the choice of candidates in Digapahandi, Aska and Berhampur Assembly segments in Ganjam
The party selected Pinki Pradhan, a television actor for Digapahandi and supporters of several candidates started a flurry of protests. Srikanta Padhy, one of the aspirants along with his supporters staged a dharna in front of the party office here on Sunday.
Padhy said my supporters are angry but we will abide the decision of the party. Padhy’s supporters blamed Bhrugu Boxipatra, BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate, for instigating the party against their leader.
The supporters of Uttam Panigrahy, a ticket hopeful, protested in front of the party office in Bhubaneswar. Panigrahy also threatened to resign and contest as an Independent.
‘We have toiled hard to strengthen the party organization and will oppose anyone from outside,’ said a supporter of Panigrahy.
In Digapahandi, BJD’s senior leader and minister for food supply and consumer welfare minister Surya Narayan Patro has been pitted against the former NAC chairperson and Congress candidate Prafulla Panda.
In Aska, the name of Saroj Padhy, a former MLA was announced but later withdrawn in favour of Debaraj Mohanty, the sitting BJD MLA as its candidate. Mohanty joined the BJP after the BJD fielded Manjula Swain, wife of Ladu Kishor Swain, the sitting MP, who passed away last month. Infuriated supporters of Padhy are protesting the name change.
‘My supports are very much upset. We will consult with my supporters to take any final decision,’said Padhy. The Congress candidate is a new face, Manoj Jena.
Kanhu Charana Pati’s nomination from Berhampur has been opposed by several leaders including the former mayor Siba Shankar Das, who is now in jail on several charges. His supporters said Asha Kunari, his wife, might contest the election as an Independent candidate.
