Paradip, Dec 24 (LocalWire): Police today detained several demonstrators for protesting and ransacking the office of JSW steel plant here.
The demonstrators also protested in front of the Paradip police station.
Unemployed youths under the banner of Student Organization of Biju Pattnaik University (SOBU) alleged that they were not being provided employment even after the district administration had assured them in October of job opportunities in the steel major’s new plant that is going to be set up here soon.
JSW steel company, they alleged, was not giving priority to local skilled engineers despite them possessing the required skills. Contractors were engaging non-Odia workers while JSW ignored local youths in the unskilled sector too.
Vice President (projects) JSW Paradip Terminal, Praveen Jhanji, had assured and committed to fulfill their demands in October.
He had promised that local youths would be given priority in jobs and employment would be provided to skilled engineers within two months.
The district administration had also decided that contractors engaged by the JSW Paradip Terminal would give priority to local youths while providing employment in unskilled sectors, unemployed engineers would be given priority and the company would ensure that local youths engaged by the global contractors are not harassed.
But since the deadline was over and no jobs provided yet, irate activists of SOBU demonstrated demanding jobs.
