Berhampur, Jan 30 (LocalWire) After a week of the road accident near Bramhanigaon in Kandhamal district claimed at least 11 people and injured around 40 others, police on Wednesday said they have arrested driver of the mini-truck.
Driver Ranjan Mandal was arrested from Daringibadi area on Tuesday and forwarded to the court, said Bramhanigaon police station limit inspector-in-charge Jayachandra Mallick on Wednesday.
He was sent to jail custody after his bail plea was rejected by the court.
After the incident, Mandal was admitted at Bramhanigaon Community Health Center (CHC) for treatment.
He, however, escaped from the hospital a day after the mishap. Police formed a team to search him.
Acting on a tip off, he was arrested by a team of police, said Mallick.
Meanwhile, police is yet to trace owner of the vehicle.
“We have identified the owner of the vehicle and search has been intensified to arrest him” the police officer said.
Over 50 people, including women and children, were travelling in the mini-truck from Kusum to Bramhanigaon to attend a religious function at a church when the mishap took place.
Six people died on the spot, when the mini-truck plunged into the gorge, around 30-feet off the road at Bangardua ghat,, while four others died on way to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
A two-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at the medical college here three days of the mishap.
Other injured people are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the state, including Berhampur, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and their condition is stated to be stable, sources said.
The state government announced free treatment to the injured.
