Berhampur, Dec 21 (LocalWire) Normal life at Kandhamal was severely affected as mercury in the tribal dominated district continued to drop to make it the coldest place of Odisha.
The minimum temperature of Phulbani and Daringibadi in the district was recorded at 7 and 8.5 degree Celsius respectively on Friday.
Previous nigh temperature of these towns was recorded at 9 degree Celsius.
Interior parts of the district, including Bramhanigaon, Kotagarh, Belaghara, Raikia and Phiringia, are reeling under severe cold as the minimum temperature in these pockets stayed between 7 to 9 degree Celsius, said officials.
Dense fog in the morning affected vehicular traffic and locals were forced to stay indoors, while tourists visiting Daringibadi were seen enjoying the cold weather.
Daringibadi, also known as Kashmir of Odisha for its cold weather, attracts tourists from far off places, especially in winter.
“We enjoyed the weather with dense fog. The region is very cold,” said a tourist from Kolkata.
In several places, people were seen huddling around the bonfires to keep themselves warm.
A cold wave blowing from the north and northwest side and snow-fall in Himanchal Pradesh are some of the reasons for the dip in mercury in several places of Odisha, including Kandhamal.
The night temperature is likely to go down further as the atmosphere is very clean at present, said experts.
