Bhubaneswar, August 11 (LocalWire): Security measures have been stepped up along the 480-km stretch of Odisha coast to deal with any seaborne threat from any quarters in the wake of the threat perception following the abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir.
Fleets of CG ships and aircraft have been pressed into service to thwart possible infiltration or subversive ploy and the Coast Guard has been put under high alert to counter any sort of exigencies.
The security operation is being carried on in coordination with the coastal security agencies of the Odisha government, Paradip Coast Guard personnel said.
The patrolling has been intensified along Digha-Gopalpur-Puri coast in view of the perceptible threat from across the sea route, said CG personnel while refusing the divulge any further details.
“We are on the alert. Round-the-clock patrolling is in full swing from our CG bases at Paradip and Gopalpur,” a Coast Guard officer said.
The coast guard beside the subsidiary coastal security agencies is on the alert. The purpose is to maintain the national security by countering terror strikes and curtailing acts of infiltration, he added.
“The marine wing of the state police are also acting in cohesion with the coast guard to keep a tab on suspicious movement of vessels along the sea coast,” the state police’s Coastal Security Wing’s nodal officer Bishnu Charan Mishra informed.
“The Marine Fisheries Department, traditional marine fishermen, trawler operators and other stakeholders are also assisting in the patrolling exercise. They have been asked to inform the security agencies of any suspicious movement of vessels along the coastal water,” the officer said.
According to available information, fishermen, and crews of trawlers have also been advised to transmit the sighting of any suspicious vessels along the coast through the disaster alert transmitters. “Through the transmitters, they could easily alert the coastal security agencies on the suspicious movement of vessels,” the officer stated.
“Every year, coordinated security exercise is held on several occasions to meet with exigencies. The stakeholders have been made familiar with the standard operating procedures of the sea-route security mechanism,” he concluded.
