Kendrapara, March 1(LocalWire): Twelve brick kilns were shut down here today for violating environment laws and running illegally without the mandatory clearance certificates.
‘We shut down 12 illegal brick kilns at Alijanga village on the river Govari as the kiln owners violated the environment protection and pollution prevention measures,’ said tehsildar of Kendrapara Hemalata Bahalia.
‘No brick kiln would be permitted to operate in the area without getting an environment clearance from the State Pollution Control Board,’ added the officer.
Earlier some activists of Kendrapara had demanded the closure of all the illegal brick kilns units in the district.
They alleged that these pollution-inducing units mushroomed near riversides since most were owned by the ruling party leaders and that the owners found a way out to influence the administration.
The brick kilns billowed smoke which was harmful. Also since they were mostly near the riverside, they created a lot of other health-related issues for the villagers. The mercury level rose in the vicinity during summer.
The riverbeds were earlier used as farmlands but have turned barren now. The activists also sought restoration of the agricultural land and water bodies.
