Kendrapada, Nov 28 (LocalWire): A debt-ridden farmer of Kendrapada district today committed suicide by consuming poison after he lost his crops to pest attack.
Farmers blocked Gopalpur Chhack and demanded Rs five lakh compensation for the family members of the deceased.
The deceased farmer Ramachandra Barik of Nurugaon village under Rajnagar block raised paddy crop on his four acres land after obtaining loan of Rs 95,000 from the village Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society, Self Help Group and private moneylenders.
But, the recent pest attack on the crops ruined his hopes to maintain a family of five.
‘Had there been no pest attack, we would be busy harvesting paddy in December. But we are groping in the dark now. My husband ended his life over crop loss. He was upset recently after watching the damaged crops,’ said his widow Pramalata.
‘The pest attack on the crops after Cyclone Bulbul wrought havoc on the finances of the farmers,’ said Sangram Das, a villager.
Dibendu Sekhar Dass , the Tehasildar of Rajnagar said, ‘We rushed to the village to investigate.
I will submit a report to the district Collector soon.
The district administration paid Rs 30,000 to the widow from Red Cross fund.’
