Kendrapara, March 1 (Localwire): The Kendrapara police were caught in a raging controversy after they detained an IAF official in a land dispute case, inviting the ire from civic groups and ex-servicemen for not allowing him to join duty in Kashmir at a time of crisis.
Susant Mohapatra, 30, had come to his native Bilamugabadi village last week for a month’s vacation. He, however, had to cut short his trip after he was asked to report for duty immediately.
As he was preparing to leave home on Wednesday, police arrested him in a land dispute case. Pradip Mohapatra, his father and a school teacher, was also detained in the case.
Though Susant was able to travel the next day, after obtaining bail from a local court, the incident has left the family in a state of bitterness.
On Friday, they decided to take the matter to the superintendent of police Nitin Sekhar over alleged high-handedness of the police in detaining them. They also claimed they have been abused at the police station.
The father also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, seeking strict action against the policemen.
The SP said, “We are investigating the allegations of the family members.”
When contacted the officer, who made the arrest, said, “The IAF personnel and his father was arrested in a case related to land dispute with some villagers.”
Many ex-servicemen, meanwhile, from Kendrapara criticized the police action, claiming the arrest was made in a false against the officer who was going to serve the country at a critical time.
Condemning the arrest, president of Kendrapara Citizen Forum Biswanath Behera said, “When the officer is going to fight against Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, police are trying to prevent him by arresting in a false case at the behest some influential persons. The court rightly granted him bail.”
