Kendrapara, Mar 21 (Local Wire): At least 120 women and girls from 10 Self Help Groups (SHGs) from Kendrapara district are now busy these days to come up with a three-layered anti-bacterial face masks to combat shortage of masks in the market due to Coronavirus threat.
“We have now been working hard to prepare masks for the last two weeks.
We are now burning the midnight oil to ensure adequate masks are prepared through us at this crucial time.
We are making masks of different sizes and selling it in the range of Rs 15-Rs 25 per piece, “ said Rina Rout, a member of SHG based in Kandira village in the district.
According to Gouri Swain, Secretary of Ma Mangala Self Help Group (SHG) in village Iswarpur, their group members are now busy making masks to cater to the short in supply despite higher demands in the market.
Puspalata Behera, another member of Ma Chandi SHG in Ajagarapatia village said, “The mask preparations started two weeks back and we prepared close to 2000 masks and hope to earn more money through this exercise. ”
A mask making workshop is now crammed with hundreds of masks in village Suniti as 10 women SHG workers are busy to prepare masks.
The mask makers here are expected to soon catch up with the best, thanks to a potentially rich market in the district and its adjoining areas due to Coronavirus scare.
“The district has around 10 SHG tailoring groups. They have received money from us to stitch blouses, shirts, pants and others. We provided them sewing machines and proper training and as a result they are now making face masks, said District Project Manager (DPM) of Odisha Livelihood Mission , Satyabhama Pradhan.
As coronavirus panic grips the state , many medical supply stores have run out of surgical masks.
A medicine shop owner of Kendrapada said that the demand for masks spiked 10 folds in the past few days.
More than 500 masks have been sold in the past four days and no further notice on new stocks has come till now.
The demand for masks is very high in the recent times as many people are struggling to find ways to protect themselves from the spreading viral disease.
Many companies produced masks have not been able to keep up with the surging demands.
“The people under pressure are keep on buying the masks as soon as they reach the store houses, at this juncture women SHG members are doing a great job my making hundreds of masks in the district, said Urmila Mishra the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Kendrapara.
