Berhampur, Jan 10 (LocalWire) Two weightlifters from Odisha have won gold and silver in the second edition of Khelo India Youth Games-2019 held at Pune, Maharashtra on Wednesday, the first day of the national event.
Bhaktaram Desti won the gold in 49-kg boys’ category with lifting of total 186 kg (81 snatche and 105 clean & jerk) in the Khelo India competition.
Muna Nahak of Berhampur city won silver medal by snatching 230 kg (102 kg snatch and 126 kg clean and jerk) in 55-kg boys’ category, sources said here on Thursday.
Bhaktaram and Muna had won the gold and bronze medal in the Youth and Junior National Weightlifting Championship-2018 held at Nagpur, Maharashtra from December 15-22
Bhaktaram, one of the inmates of the Berhampur Sports Hostel here had won the gold medal by lifting 83 kg in snatch and 104 kgs in clean & jerk for a total of 187 kgs in boys’ 49 kg category.
Muna had won bronze in 55-kg (junior) category in the competition.
Berhampur Sports’ Hostel superintendent SK Majhi said more competitors, mainly in weightlifting category, were expected to bring medals to the state in Khelo India Games this time.
“The participants from Odisha had practiced hard and are better than the rest. We hope they will do better in the competition and bring more medals this time,” said Majhi
Several sports lovers and officials of Ganjam District Weightlifting and Wrestling Association congratulated both the weightlifters of Odisha.
“They have made Odisha proud,” said Rabi Rath, advisor of the association.
As many as 12 youths, including seven boys and five girls, from the state are participating in the Khelo India events, he said.
