Paradip, August 25 (LocalWire): With a spurt in kidnappings and abuse of minors in the slums of the port city, the residents, especially women are living in panic.
A seven-year-old girl was kidnapped from Nayabazar area yesterday and locals claimed there was an attempt to rape her.
Residents saved her from the molestation bid after they heard her screams for help and nabbed the accused.
The locals handed the kidnapper to the Jatadhari Marine Police station.
Police have started an investigation into the incident.
IIC of Jatadhari police station, Bharat Kumar Behera, said ‘police have arrested the accused and sent both the accused and victim to a local hospital for examination.’
Frequent kidnapping of minor boys have been reported quite frequently from different slums here.
Though, the local police claim to have solved several cases, many kidnapped children have not yet been traced.
The women who work as daily labourers are scared to go to work to other areas in the city leaving their minors unattended at home.
Chairperson of district child welfare committee, Bisesweri Mohanty, expressed serious concerns with the rise in child abuse cases.
‘We have sought the intervention of local police and child protection officers to create awareness and take preventive measures to check child rape and kidnapping cases in the district,’ she said.
