Jagatsinghpur, Jan 26 (LocalWire) Lieutenant General Chandi Prasad Mohanty, appointed by the government as General Officer-Commanding-in-chief of the southern Army command is an Odia and hails from Jagatsinghpur.
As soon as he took charge, the people in his home district burst in to cheers.
A native of Jayabada village, under Jagatsinghpur Municipality, Mohanty is one of the few Odia officers to get such a coveted rank.
He was brilliant from his childhood, recalls a family member.
He did schooling up to class III in a local school and up to class VI at nearby Bagashai UP School.
He was selected to study in a military school after qualifying a prestigious all India test.
He is the first Odia boy to get admission at Rashtriya Indian Military College.
He studied at National Defence Academy before his joining as the Second Lieutenant in the Indian army.
His father Jitendra Kishore Mohanty is a retired government employee while his mother late Sarada Kumari Mohanty was a professor in Odia department in a local college.
Mohanty’s brother Kali Prasad Mohanty works as a general manager in Panipath Refinery while another brother Devi Prasad Mohanty works as an advocate.
Known as a strong and determined officer among his colleagues, Lieutenant General Mohanty has operational experience along the borders with Pakistan and China.
He has also been active in counter-insurgency operations in Assam.
After hearing the news of his appointment, family members and cross-section of people in Jagatsinghpur district expressed their happiness.
“We are proud of his achievements” Dipti Das, a local leader told LocalWire.
Village women had criticized his mother for sending him to army school when he was 11.
Now they appreciate and praise her for taking such a bold decision during his childhood, she said.
“Our village son is a top officer in Indian Army and he has made us proud”.
