Paradip, August 5 (LocalWire): The RTI activists of Kujang today sought the President of India’s intervention not to recommend the amendments to the Right to Information Act passed in Parliament.
Protesting the amendment, hundreds of RTI activists led by Babu Ram Chudhry, convener of RTI Act Abhiyan demonstrated in Kujang and submitted a memorandum to the President of India through the local BDO today.
They said the Bill is not in the interest of the people of the country and is an anti- people act.
Lok Sabha passed the Right to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2019 where government has powers to fix salaries, tenures and other terms and conditions of employment of information commissioners of the Centre and state.
The Bill states, ‘The functions being carried out by the Election Commission of India and the Central and state Information Commissions are totally different.
The Election Commission of India is a Constitutional body.
On the other hand Central Information Commission and State Information Commission are statutory bodies established under the Right to Information Act, 2005.’
RTI activists opposed the Centre’s proposal to amend the RTI Act, alleging that it will end the independence of Central and states information commissions.
