Jagatsinghpur, Sept 8 (LocalWire): Children attending the district anganwadi centers are neglected by the administration as well as the child welfare department, allege guardians as they are served sub-standard food flouting the special nutrition programme and also because they face a lot of hardship during monsoons due to lack of road communication.
Jagatsinghpur district has 1840 anganwadi centres but more than sixty percent of these centers do not have own buildings and operate in school premises, club rooms or other public places.
The building of nearly fifty to sixty anganwadi centres are situated in low-lying and marshy areas.
Chandrakant Swain and other guardians alleged that the anganwadi centre at Alana village under Bacchalo panchayat in Naugaon block where nearly 20 kids study, is waterlogged during the monsoons as it is built in a swamp area and poisonous snakes build nests in the classrooms.
Nothing has been done despite frequent reminders to the administration and child welfare department and anganwadi workers now conduct classes on the concrete road of the village for the safety of the children.
Children of another anganwadi centre at Alasudha in Jagatsinghpur block also face lot of difficulties because of lack of road communication. The contractor built the centre in the middle of a marsh and children fear to attend classes during rainy season.
Sarpanch of Bacchalo panchayat Narottam Kandi said, ‘though this center has been constructed five years ago no steps have yet been taken to construct the road and kids suffer due to the neglect. Panchayat has allocated Rs 2 lakhs for the construction of a road which will start after the rainwater recedes.’
Additional district social welfare officer Madhbananda Mallick said, ‘land has been identified for construction of 1032 aganwadi centres in different villages of this district and constructions of 704 centers have been completed so far’.
