Berhampur, May 2 (Localwire): In view of the cyclonic storm Fani,lakhs of people have been shifted to safer places in Ganjam and Gajapati districts, official sources said.
Around one lakh people in Ganjam district have been shifted to the shelter centers, while 8000 people in Gajapati district shifted to safer places as precautionary measures, they added.
“We have already shifted around one lakh people from all 22 blocks in the district”, said Ganjam collector Vijay Amruta Kulange.
He said another one lakh people would be shifted by Wednesday afternoon.
“They have been housed in the temporary relief camps set up at 580 different locations, that include 77 multi-purposed shelter homes”, he said “We will not allow any person to live in mud houses during the cyclone,” he added.
Similarly, over 8000 people have been shifted in Gajapati district till the report was filed.
They have been housed in school buildings in different areas. Free kitchen and other facilities have been provided to them.
District collectors and senior police officials of both the districts visited several vulnerable areas of their respective districts.
Amitabh Thakur, IG, Ganjam, visited the coastal villages in the district to assess the situation.
