Berhampur, Feb 13 (LocalWire): Irrespective of their party affiliations, the leaders of different political parties came together on Thursday to demand a high-level inquiry into the matter of self-immolation by a BJD leader inside the premises of the SP Office in Berhampur on Wednesday.
Meenakhi Mishra (41), who is an executive body member of the ruling party’s women wing, was referred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Mishra tried to self-immolate herself to make a point that her son Raja Mishra was arrested in a false case on January 28.
Describing it as an unfortunate incident, the BJD’s Ganjam district women wing leader Sanghamitra Dalia urged the SP to take action against the persons directly or indirectly involved in the incident.
“A wrong message will go to the public following the incident inside the premises of the SP office. The Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has stressed upon the safety and security of women and implementation of 5T in the Police stations,” said the Vice President of BJD’s state unit of women wing, Mamata Bisoi.
After the incident, the SP said that the victim might have hidden the kerosene bottle inside her bag. He told LocalWire that the Police immediately rescued her and rushed her to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
Opposition political parties like BJP and Congress’s district units alleged that the government has failed to provide justice to the woman.
“We demand for a high-level inquiry under which circumstances this incident took place inside the premises of the SP office,” said BJP’s Ganjam district president Bibhuti Jena.
“How did she carry the kerosene bottle inside the office despite the security check at the entrance gate,” asked the former President of BJP’s district unit, Kanhu Charan Pati.
