Paradip, Feb 24 (LocalWire) Panic gripped a fishing hamlet here on Sunday after leaks were detected in an oil pipeline of IOCL’s Paradip Refinery, an official said.
The refinery has sent a team to the site to find out the exact spot and cause of the leak.
Leaks were observed in a pipeline on the Atharbanki-Neherubangla road, a witness said, adding that the oil spilled into the nearby Kaudia River.
“If it’s not stopped immediately, it could threaten the local marine life,” an officer of the state pollution control board said, requesting anonymity. He added that steps are being taken to plug the leakage soon.
In July 2018, a similar oil pipeline leakage had resulted in the death of many marine species.
In 2015, an IOCL pipeline was punctured when miscreants tried to steal oil. Police had then seized a boat with 500 liters of oil and a pump set from the spot.
