Puri, September 26 (LocalWire): The district administration here on Wednesday initiated a legal process for acquisition of land within the 75-metre radius of Meghanad Prachir, the compound wall of the 12th century Shree Jagannath Temple.
The unauthorised structures around the Jagannath temple had earlier been demolished in a month-long exercise.
The notification for the acquisition of land was issued today in accordance with the legal provisions, Puri collector Balwant Singh told the LocalWire.
The district administration had abided by directives of the state cabinet directives to demolish illegal structures along the temple boundary wall.
Earlier, the Justice BP Das Commission had recommended that all structures within the 75-metre radius of the temple should be removed to ensure safety and security of pilgrims at the Jagannath temple.
Over 300 families who are affected by the eviction are being adequately compensated as per the rehabilitation package announced by the government that has also approved a Rs 95-crore housing project for them.
The proposed housing project with dwelling units of 520 square feet area will be within 1.5 km radius of the Jagannath Temple.
