Jagatsinghpur, Oct 29 (LocalWire): Hundreds of people today demonstrated in front of the Community Health Centre, Erasama and blocked the road at Erasama Bazaar after the death of a ward member due to medical negligence.
Susant Kumar Swain, 50, from Tantia under Baleipur panchayat of Erasama police limit was hit by a speeding motorbike while going to the market. He was taken to CHC, Erasama.
Family members of Swain alleged that no doctor attended him.
He could not be shifted to SCB Medical College and hospital, Cuttack as there was no oxygen.
Although the total sanctioned strength of doctors is five including four specialist doctors, only two are working in the hospital.
Patients, as a result, sufferas they do not get proper health services.
There is no oxygen or ventilator in Erasama CHC and critical patients have died due to lack of doctors and infrastructure creating discontentment among the local people.
The relatives of Swain alleged the hospital staff were irresponsible and careless and demanded compensation for the death.
Sarpanch of Baleipur panchayat Murlidhar Mallick alleged ‘Swain was alive when he was admitted to the hospital.
Timely intervention of doctors could have saved his life but gross negligence of medical staff and non-supply of oxygen are the main cause of his death.’
Misbehaviour by police towards the people demonstrating instead of solving their issue also intensified the stir.
IIC of Erasama police station, Prasant Kumar Majhi threatened agitators to call off their protest or else police would deploy hundreds of youths to beat them and forcibly vacate the spot leading to violence.
The locals urged the administration to take action against errant police personnel for threatening them with deployment of goons.
Meanwhile, BDO, Erasama, Kailash Chandra Behera and Medical Officer, Erasama CHC, Amiya Kumar Swain rushed to the spot and pacified the irate people by promising to fulfill their demands.
