Puri, April 22 (LocalWire): Pipili MLA Pradeep Maharathy was arrested today for ‘attacking’ a flying squad in Pipili, Puri district, last night.
A flying squad, a static surveillance team and a video surveillance team had raided a farmhouse in Pipili on Sunday midnight after receiving information that a feast was being arranged and money would be distributed to influence voters.
Some miscreants attacked the three teams leaving five officials injured.
The ruling party legislator has been charged with serious offenses including 307 (Attempt to Murder), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 341 (wrongful restraint), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty), 147 (rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of the offense committed to prosecution of common object), 171-B (Bribery), 186 and Section 123 of Representation of People’s Act, sources said.
Maharathy, a six-time MLA from Pipili, has courted controversies a number of times for his remarks. In January he had to resign from the Cabinet for his remarks on the acquittal of two accused in the infamous Pipli gang rape and murder case.
Meanwhile, police have beefed up security in Pipili and adjoining areas following Maharathy’s arrest.
Police said adequate personnel have been mobilised in the area to thwart any untoward the incident, ‘Tight vigil will be kept on polling booths in the area on Tuesday, when the Assembly segment will go to polls.’
