Berhampur, June 30 (LocalWire): The police have arrested a 26-year old man Gopal Patra from Sorada in Ganjam district on charges of providing fake Kisana Card to farmers here.
Patra was allegedly charging between Rs 300 to Rs 500 for the fake card.
The police have seized some documents including a registration book, a laptop, and mobile phones from him during arrest, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Aska Suryamani Pradhan said.
He was arrested on the complaint filed by the Sorada assistant agriculture officer Raja Kishore Swain and a case has been registered against him at Baragarh police station in the district.
The accused, a college dropout was impersonating as a senior officer of the Ministry of Agriculture for over three months and had issued the fake cards to around 500 farmers in Baragarh and Sorada areas, Pradhan said.
The police, however, suspect that a bigger gang might be working in the district as complaints of similar cards are also pouring in from other blocks, including Sanakhemundi, Dharakote, Digapahandi, Polasara, and Patrapur.
The issue was discussed at the district agriculture strategy committee meeting held recently, where the additional district magistrate for revenue Laxmikant Sethi directed the concerned agriculture officers to lodge FIR and take stringent against those cheating the farmers.
