Berhampur, Oct 23 (LocalWire): A 33-year-old man was arrested and 180 kg ganja worth Rs 9 lakhs was seized from his possession at Baribandha Chhak under Mohana police station limits in Gajapati district, police said today.
During a special excise drive before Diwali, police found the contraband in seven bags last evening. The accused was identified as Thomas Nayak of Bhaliaganda village near Mohana. He was produced before the local court today, police said.
The accused was waiting for a Berhampur-bound bus to transport the marijuana, said SP (Gajapati) Sarah Sharma.
The accused collected the narcotic substances from nearby areas. He might be taking the contraband to someone in Berhampur for smuggling it out of the state, said inspector in charge, Mohana police station Sujit Nayak.
Police, however, said the accused was not involved in smuggling the ganja.
Adava and Mohan areas in tribal-dominated Gajapati, is considered one of the major ganja-growing regions in the state and marijuana is smuggled to other states with the help of local people.
Last month, police seized around 210 kg ganja from two places in Mohana and arrested two persons, one of them from Bihar.
Similarly, police also seized around 3000 kg marijuana, estimated to be worth around Rs 3 crores that was being transported from Adava area in Gajapati district, police said.
