Rourkela, Dec 6 (LocalWire) An incident of alleged custodial death of a youth in Rajgangpur police station has come to fore on Thursday, as the family of the deceased refused to accept suicide as the cause of death.
The police said Jay Kumar Lakra (30) hanged himself in the toilet, while his family accused the man was beaten to death.
Tension prevailed at Rajgagnpur hospital, when the body was taken for post-mortem examination. As many as twenty platoon police force were deployed at Rajgangpur area to control the law and order situation.
According to sources, Lakra, a native of Laikakacha village under Kutra police station, had opened a public service centre of State Bank of India at Tunmara village about three years back.
He had been opening Jan Dhan accounts of locals and taking small deposits on behalf of the bank. But, later some of the depositors came to know Lakra has not deposited their money in the bank.
When the villagers demanded refund, Lakra reportedly fled the village.
Last Saturday, he was spotted at Sonakhan weekly market when the locals caught him and handed him over to Rajgagnpur police.
According to his family, the police informed Lakra committed suicide on Wednesday night by hanging himself with his track pant from the toilet ceiling.
“It is surprising that the police did not forward him to court and detained him for three days,” said his father Budhram Lakra.
“The police must have beaten him to death and only cooking up the suicide story,” Budhram added.
Police officials on the other hand remained tight-lipped over the incident.
“A proper inquiry will be conducted as per the protocol of human rights commission, over the alleged custody death case,” said Kavita Jalan, DIG (WR).
