Baripada, August 28 (LocalWire): A local court in Mayurbhanj today awarded death sentence to a 35-year-old accused in the rape and murder of a 9-year-old child in June last year.
According to the government prosecutor, the Court found the accused guilty in one of the rarest of rare cases.
He was also sentenced to different periods of jail terms for different offences which would run concurrently with the death sentence.
The convict, identified as Jaminikanta Mahanta of Betnati area, had given a ride to the victim, who was known to him, on his bicycle on the pretext of taking her to the Raja festivity.
Her body was found a day later with injury marks suggesting rape and death by strangulation.
Mahanta, who was out on bail for committing a rape earlier, was arrested and forwarded to the court after being booked under Sections 376, 376 (A) and 302 of IPC and POCSO Act (protection of children against sexual offences Act) and SC, ST atrocity Act.
During investigation, police learnt that the accused had returned to the village two days before from outside the state.
The Chief Minister had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.
