Kendrapara, August 23 (LocalWire): Police today arrested a man, his wife and an accomplice from village Chhakana under Kendrapara Sadar police station, for killing his step-mother and dumping her body in a river to claim insurance worth Rs two lakhs.
Twenty-five-year-old Santosh Biswal and his wife Debasmita Biswal and two accomplices hatched the plot to kill Sasmita Biswal, his step-mother. The woman went missing since 10 August and her daughter, suspecting foul play, filed a police complaint.
‘During investigation, police fished out a woman’s body from the river Luna at village Bilabalarampur under Marsaghai police station on 21 August. The daughter identified the body as her mother Sasmita Biswal’s and a proper investigation led to the trio’s arrest,’ said IIC of Kendrapara Sadar police station, Maheswar Sethi.
During interrogation, the step-son and his wife confessed to killing the woman after she refused to part with the insurance money due to her as the sole nominee after her husband’s death last year.
They strangulated her with the help of two accomplices Prakash Nayak and Pradip Rout and transported the body on a motorbike and then dumped it in the river Luna on 11 August as Santosh was under the impression that after his step-mother’s death, he would inherit his father’s properties as the sole legal heir.
A case has been registered against all the three accused under section 302 (murder) 201 (destroying evidence) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
‘We formed a team to arrest another accused Pradip Nayak, who is absconding. All the three accused were produced in the court at Kendrapara today. The court rejected their bail applications and remanded them into judicial custody,’ added the police officer
