Rourkela, November 29 (LocalWire): In a bizarre case of accidental death a man trying to run away from an elephant ended up running into a herd of the animals and was trampled to death near Hatibari on Thursday.
The deceased Md Masood, in his late thirties, was a resident of Bisra area, 26 kilometers from here.
The small-time businessman, Masood was returning from the Hatibari weekly rural market in an auto-rickshaw with two friends when they spotted an elephant standing on the road near Odogaon.
Sensing trouble they stopped the vehicle, and while two of his friends ran in the opposite direction of the jumbo, Masood who was driving the three-wheeler ran in another direction towards a field.
Unfortunately for him, a whole herd of elephants was grazing on that field and was soon surrounded and killed by the animals.
His dead body was recovered late on Friday morning and sent for post mortem, Hatibari police station inspector-in-charge Shymlala Oram said.
“The family of the deceased will get all the compensation as per the government provision.
The family has also been given Rs 20,000 for performing his last rites,” range officer S Sahani said.
