Jagatsinghpur, December 17 (LocalWire): In a case related to dowry death of a woman, the district session judge Anand Charan Behera on Monday pronounced the husband guilty of murdering his wife and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Mamatarani Swain of Dhanuharbelari under Bandar Marine police had married Harshabardhan Swain of village Nalara under Balikuda police limit in 2015 and the parents had given Rs 2 lakh, gold ornaments, and other household articles as dowry.
However, the woman’s parents were unable to pay another Rs 2 lakh that the in-laws started demanding to open a shop.
According to the FIR filed by the father of the deceased, Harshabardhan took his wife from their home on 5 August 2016 on the pretext of a medical checkup at CHC, Balikuda.
However, when the couple did not return home till 9 PM, the victim’s father Purna Charan Swain contacted them on their mobile phones but could not contact either of them.
Later, her family found the body of Mamatarani on Ichhapur-Dasbatia road near Kerupada village with multiple injuries and her father filed a police complaint accusing the husband of killing his daughter.
Judge Behera also imposed five months of rigorous imprisonment on Harshbardhan or a fine of Rs 10,000 in default.
