Berhampur, April 13 (Localwire): A 42-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant early on Saturday near Panchuani jungle in Ganjam district, some 40 km from here.
The deceased was identified as Bhima Behera of Sobha Chandrapur.
The elephant attacked him when he went to the jungle to bring his cow.
He was died on the spot. The villagers found his body and informed the forest officials.
The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Forest range officer R.N. Mallick said the family of the deceased will get compensation as per rule.
He added that Rs 40,000 has been sanctioned to the family members to perform his last rites.
A tusker and nine female elephants were seen roaming in the area.
The herd may have migrated from Tamana jungle, Mallick said.
“We are keeping a strict vigil on the movement of the herd,” he said.
Following the elephant attack, panic gripped in the nearby villages.
