Bhubaneswar, March 27 (LocalWire): A man, who has been wrongly imprisoned for 17 days in a 2013 robbery case, was released from Choudwar jail in Cuttack on Wednesday, police said.
Chandan Maharana, who hails from Lalbag in Cuttack, was arrested on March 11 after police incorrectly thought he was involved in the crime, while someone else by the same name was the culprit.
Executing a non-bailable warrant, police had picked him up from his home for a robbery in Sikharpur.
“I was in shock when police picked me for a crime I never committed. I tried my best to convince them that they have picked a wrong person. But they shifted me to a prison next day,” he said after his release.
Maharana has demanded strong action against the erring police, and said he will lodge a defamation case against them.
“I was humiliated in front of my family members and neighbors. People visit the police for justice, but I was made to suffer,” he said.
Earlier, police commissioner Satyajit Mohanty had admitted that police made a mistake and assured Maharana’s family members to facilitate his release.
