Bhubaneswar, May 18 (LocalWire): Top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda was sentenced to life imprisonment on Saturday by a court here for waging war against the state.
While awarding the punishment in connection with a 2014 case, Berhampur Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Sahu also ordered Panda to pay a penalty of Rs 10,000.
Police had arrested Panda from Badabazar area of Bhubaneswar on July 17, 2014. A huge cache of arms, cash and gold were seized from his possession.
Several criminal cases were registered against him in Ganjam, Phulbani and Rayagada. While Panda has been acquitted in 52 cases so far, the court has found him guilty in a 2014 case for which he has been given a life sentence under Section-121 of the IPC, public prosecutor Gyanendra Jena told LocalWire.
Panda’s counsel Deepak Patnaik said police had slapped several false cases against his client following his arrest in 2014. “Panda has been acquitted in 52 out of 135 cases.
We will move to a higher court to challenge today’s court verdict,” he said.
