Rourkela, Oct 18 (LocalWire): Security in all railway stations, between Rourkela and Koraput, has been beefed up and high alert issued following Maoists threats to damage the railway and its property, official sources said here today.
“All the stations between Rourkela (under South Eastern Railway) and Koraput (under East Coast Railway) have been put on high alert as there is perceptible threat from Maoists to cause extensive damage to the railways and its property”, superintendent of railway police, Rourkela, Trinath Patel said.
They always keep an eye on Maoist activities because of their presence in the region, Patel said adding security has been strengthened in view of the threat issued by ultras a few days ago to cause problem to the prestigious Mumbai-Howrah Gitnjali Super-Fast Express.
Meanwhile, security at Rourkela station has been tightened with personnel in uniform maintaining strict vigil.
The baggage scanner installed earlier was lying idle. It has since been activated and the whole station put under CCTV surveillance, he said.
Stating that prevention is better than cure, Patel said he had requested South East railway and East Coast Railway to install CCTV cameras under Rourkela jurisdiction on war footing.
As the stations are falling under two railway zones, he had to send separate proposals and the concerned authorities had responded to very positively, he said.
“We have definite intelligence report of (Maois threat) which prompted us to remain on constant vigil, rather on our toes”, a GRP official said on condition of anonymity adding security drills are also being planned for quick reaction.
Meanwhile, commuters are surprised over the tight security measures with personnel in uniform deployed all over the station and passengers thoroughly examined.
