Berhampur, June 4 (LocalWire): Migrant workers staged a dharana on National Highway 16 at Haladiapadar on Thursday, demanding free food and transportation from the government to return to their native places in the state.
Migrant workers arriving from different states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh in buses have demanded free transportation to reach their homes in other districts of Odisha from Ganjam administration.
The labourers hail from Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, Kendrapara etc.
The returnees lifted the blockade after the intervention of the district administration.
“We have coordinated with their respective district administrations to send buses to take the people,” said an officer.
The buses will ferry the returnees directly to institutional quarantine centres.
“When inter-state bus and train services have resumed, there is no justification for demanding free transportation to reach their destinations.
The returnees could have travelled in the buses in which they returned instead of alighting at the border area,” said Project Director, District Rural Development Authority (DRDA) Ganjam, Sidharth Shankar Swain.
