Berhampur, Nov 24 (LocalWire)To prevent poaching of migratory birds in the Chilika, wildlife officials have intensified patrolling in and outside the lake on the eve of Chhadakhai, celebrated a day after Karika Purnima (full moon day) on Saturday and Sunday.
During the month of Kartika, most of the Hindus forego non-vegetarian dishes till the Purnima, as a part of the sacred ritual. The day after the full moon, people tend to indulge in non-vegetarian dishes.
Demand of meat, chicken, egg and fish would be in high on the day. Officials anticipated possible poaching of the birds in the Chilika, prior to the Chhadakhai as meats of water fowls are in high demand in the nearby towns, including Balugaon, Berhampur, Khurda and Bhubaneswar.
“As a preventive measure, patrolling has been intensified in the lake from Friday. The drive will continued till next three days” said a senior officer of Chilika wildlife division. Special emphasis was given to vulnerable areas like Tangi range.
Sources said at least 19 camps were set up in the lake with around 100 personnel.
Almost all the staffs were engaged for the round-the-clock surveillance, the officer told LocalWire.
“Members of the bird protection committees in the nearby villages have assisted the forest personnel in patrolling. In Tangi range, we have identified some vulnerable areas,” he said.
Tangi range officer Subash Chandra Behera said patrolling has been intensified not just in shore areas, but also the markets.
‘We are also planning to raid some suspected hostels,” he added.
In Tangi range, he said, at least four bird poaching cases were reported so far.
Four bird poachers have been arrested, while 37 dead birds seized from their possession, he added.
Around one lakh migratory birds of different species have already congregated in the lagoon so far. Most of them descended in Nalabana – the bird sanctuary area in the lake.
