Berhampur, Nov 26 (LocalWire) Wildlife personnel on Monday arrested two hunters from Sorana under Tangi wildlife range for allegedly poaching migratory birds from Chilika lake.
The accused were identified as Santosh Behera (30) and Rajesh Jena (35) of Sorana village located on the bank of the blue lagoon.
The wildlife personnel caught the duo red-handed while they were processing the birds to sell their meat, said Tangi wildlife ranger Subash Chandra Behera.
He said around one-and half kilo bird meat, along with a knife, was
seized from them.
So far, at least six bird poachers have been arrested in the Tangi wildlife range, sources said.
Since meat of the waterfowls is high in demand in Bhubaneswar, Balugaon and Berhampur, local poachers have become very active around the lake.
Around one lakh migratory birds of different species have already congregated in the lagoon. Most of them descended at Nalabana, the bird sanctuary area in the lake.
