Berhampur, August 21 (LocalWire): Despite the Ganjam district administration banning the Ganesh Puja, a Berhampur based artist has made at least seven miniature idols of the Elephant God on the occasion of the Ganesh Chaturthi.
Satya Maharana, a 37-year old miniature artist has made at least 7 Ganesh idols in stone, wood and crystal.
The height of the stone idols is between 3 mm to one cm, while the height of two wood idols is six mm and one cm.
Similarly, the idols made in crystal are 5.7 to 7.5 cm.
Moharana, who has a habit of making miniature idols of different God and Goddess on the major festival, said that it took him two to three days to complete all the idols.
Except for crystal, other materials like wood and stone were all waste materials collected from the streets.
“I have made these by carefully carving the wood, stone and crystal,” said Maharana, a businessman.
The wooden Ganesh was made by only curving and there was no iron nail used to finish it, he said. The wood polish, however, was painted on it to make the idol more attractive, he added.
As Ganjam district administration has imposed a ban on the Ganesh Puja this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he said that the idols would not be displayed for public view like in the previous years.
“I will display these idols in my drawing room where the people can witness them,” he added.
Last year, he had made the miniature idols of Ganesh using chalk (about 1.50 mm), waste newspapers and other materials.
The height of the chariot is 7 mm, while the height of the idol is 4 mm, he said.
“By making these sculptures from waste materials, I want to spread the message that waste materials can also be utilized to make attractive artifacts,” he added.
Earlier, Moharana had fashioned miniature images of great personalities in the country out of chalk.
These included images of Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, former President Pratibha Singh Patil, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Sonia Gandhi.
Besides these, he has also erected various smaller images of different Gods and Goddesses out of chalk.
