Berhampur, Dec 1 (LocalWire) Confronting her parents, a 16-year-old from Phulbani in Kandhamal district has reportedly sought police help to stop her impending child marriage.
According to the police, the girl has been sent to a childcare institute in Phulbani on the directions of district Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
“The girl, a student of Plus II (second year), is now in the child care institute at Phulbani,” said Kandhamal unit Childline director Rabindra Kumar Panda.
He said the police had handed over the girl to Childline.
“After rescuing her, we counseled her. After that, she was produced before the CWC. Now she is housed at the child care institute,” he said. “Her parents came to take her home on Friday,. we asked them to talk to the CWC.”
Police sources said the girl strongly rejected the proposal of her parents to marry a youth of Boudh district on Wednesday.
When her mother allegedly threatened to sell her off in Jhansi if she refused to get married, she fled to Phulbani town police station.
District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Rasmita Karana said they have foiled at least 15 child marriage bids in the district so far this year.
