Bhubaneswar, September 23 (LocalWire): With the Election Commission of India (ECI) issuing gazette notification today for the October 21 Bijepur by-poll, the model code of conduct was enforced throughout the assembly constituency in Bargarh district.
The process of filing nomination papers begins today, while the last date for nomination is 30 September.
The by-poll was necessitated because chief minister Naveen Patnaik had decided to retain his Hinjili seat and vacated the Bijepur Assembly seat.
The BJD supremo had contested from the two Assembly constituencies for the first time and had emerged victorious from both.
The voters of the Bijepur Assembly seat, a predominantly rural and agrarian belt, are facing polls for the third time in the past one-and-a-half year.
The Assembly seat had gone for by-elections on 24 February 2018 following the death of Congress MLA Subal Sahu.
BJD’s Rita Sahu, the widow of deceased Congress MLA Sahu, had defeated her nearest rival, the BJP nominee by over 41,000 votes.
Bijepur once again went to polls on 18 April during the twin polls in the state when the chief minister won the seat with a thumping mandate.
