Bhubaneswar, November 25 (LocalWire): In a shocking disclosure before the Assembly, the government on Monday stated that more than a hundred minor girls were raped each month in the state between January and September in 2019.
In a written reply, the state Home Minister Dibya Shakar Mishra stated that over 965 rape cases of minor girls were registered during the nine-month period this year.
The total number of rape cases registered in the state during 2017 was 2,221, up from 2,144 in the previous year.
In 2018, it number of registered cases went up to 2,502 cases, while overall 1,865 rape cases have been registered so far between January to September 2019.
Of the rape cases registered till September end this year, 965 cases pertained to sexual assault of minor girls, which is lower than 1,430 cases in 2018.
According to the minister’s reply, of the 1,865 rape cases registered this year till September end, six women were raped and murdered.
The minister also informed that between 2015 and 2019 (end of September) as many as 11,018 rape cases were registered in the state. Of which 55 per cent or 6,085 cases were related to minor girls.
It’s pertinent to note here that Odisha has earned the dubious track-record and is ranked second in the country in terms of registration of crimes against women.
As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Odisha witnessed 20,098 cases of crime against women in 2017 with Assam topping the list.
