Berhampur, August 9 (LocalWire): Local people, school students along with lawmakers, officers and activists today cleaned the beach at Gopalpur-on Sea, a famous tourist resort in Ganjam district.
The drive was a part of the ‘Mo Gopalpur’ programme, initiated by the district administration to attract more tourists.
Former Union minister and MP (Berhampur), Chandra Sekhar Sahu, inaugurated the programme and picked up garbage from the sandy beach of the town.
‘The cleanliness in the beach was not only to maintain pollution free-beach, but to also attracts tourists,’ he said.
‘We are trying to make Goplapur one of the best and cleanest beaches in the country,’ said Sahu.
He said the economic condition of the local people would be developed when flow of tourists increased to the town.
Among others MLA (Gopalpur) Pradeep Panigrahy, MLA (Berhampur) Bikram
Panda, MLA (Chhatrapur) Subash Behera, district Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange, also cleaned the beach with brooms.
‘The clean-up drive will continue for some more days.
We have identified around 100 volunteers, who will undertake the task.
Every day, a nodal officer will be engaged to oversee the programme,’ said Collector.
‘Our main aim is to maintain clean beach, promote tourism as well as to focus on cultural programmes,’ said the Collector.
At the same time, they also create awareness among the local people to involve and to carry on the drive, he added.
In future, he said the volunteers would be provided identity cards.
He also asked the hoteliers and residents to restrict the use of polythene and plastic.
The NAC Gopalpur was given charge to enforce the restriction of the use of environmentally-hazardous material in the town.
