Bhubaneswar, September 21 (LocalWire) Nandankanan has lost its fourth elephant in less than a month with a sub-adult female elephant dying late Friday night due to herpes viral infection, bringing down the number of pachyderms in the zoo here to 4.
“We are deeply upset. Despite the best efforts we could not save Gouri” Zoo deputy director Jayant Kumar Das told LocalWire.
The first elephant had died by the deadly virus on August 26. It was a female elephant.
The zoo’s lone tusker Chandan had died under similar circumstances on September 15.
Similarly a six-year-old elephant Kamala had succumbed to the deadly infection a day later.
With the latest death, the population of these mammals living in captive environs of the zoo has come down to four.
