Paradip Nov 23 (LocalWire) Local MLA Damodar Rout has strongly criticized organizers of Kalinga Baliyatra Mahostav Committee for installing Lord Jagannath’s chariot ‘Nandighosa’ wheel at the public festival.
Sources said the committee installed the wheel of Jagannath’s chariot at Sarala Mandap at Kalinga Baliyatra festival. The weight of this wheel is about eight quintal.
“It has been installed at this festival for attracting local people and tourists. It will later be shifted and reinstalled at the Jagannath temple in Paradip,” said sources.
Addressing a gathering, local MLA Rout said without consulting any authorized person, the organizers have installed the wheel of ‘Nandighosa’ at Kalinga Baliyatra festival for attraction of public.
“It should be worshiped at the Jagannath temple and not kept for public entertainment. This is not a religious festival and the move has hurt our sentiments,” said Rout.
Amid rift among local Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders and difference between local MLA Rout and other officials, the week-long Kalinga Baliyatra Mahotsav, a colourful reminder of the traditional maritime trade and rich culture of erstwhile Kalinga, kicked off here amid much gaiety and fanfare on Thursday.
Minister of culture and tourism Ashok Chandra Panda inaugurated the event, which will continue till Nov 28.
